What a Rainy Wedding Day Looks Like at Melhorn Manor

Every couple planning an outdoor wedding thinks about it at some point: what if it rains? It’s one of the most common questions we hear during tours, and it’s a fair one, since the weather is the one thing about your wedding day nobody can control.

The good news is that a little rain doesn’t have to mean a stressful day or a scaled-back celebration. Here’s how having both indoor and outdoor space at Melhorn Manor changes the equation, and exactly how the decision works so there are no surprises.

Why indoor/outdoor flexibility matters

A lot of wedding venues only offer one option: you’re either fully outdoors with a tent as your only backup, or you’re indoors in a space that was never really designed to also work outside. At Melhorn Manor, the property was built to offer both from the start: rolling grounds, a pond, and a waterfall for outdoor ceremonies and photos, alongside historic barns that give you a genuine indoor alternative rather than a last-resort tent.

Our Equestrian Barn and Tobacco Barn are both fully climate-controlled, so an indoor ceremony or reception isn’t a downgrade from the outdoor version. It’s simply a different, equally beautiful setting on the same property.

How the rain-day decision actually works

Because weather can change right up until the last minute, we’ve built the decision point into the start of your wedding day itself rather than days in advance. Here’s how it works:

  • You choose the morning of your wedding. When your 12-hour wedding day begins and you arrive on-site, you decide whether your ceremony will be outdoors or in the climate-controlled indoor space.
  • You sign a short waiver. If you choose to go outdoors, you’ll sign a waiver confirming that decision was yours.
  • There’s no charge to use any part of the property. Your wedding package includes full use of the entire venue, indoors and outdoors, at no additional cost.
  • A $350 fee only applies in one specific case: if our team has already set up your ceremony in the location you chose that morning, and the weather then forces a last-minute move to a different location, a $350 fee covers the cost of that second setup. If you tell us that morning you’d like the indoor space, we set it up there from the start, so no fee is involved.

In other words, the flexibility is built in and free to use. The fee only ever applies to a same-day, after-setup change of plans, not to simply choosing the indoor option.

What stays the same

Regardless of where your ceremony ends up, a few things don’t change: your day is still fully coordinated by the Melhorn Manor team, your guest experience is still comfortable, and you still get the same historic charm and modern amenities either way. Moving indoors changes the backdrop, not the quality of the day.

Tips for couples planning an outdoor or indoor/outdoor wedding

  • Ask to see both spaces on your tour, not just the outdoor ceremony spot. Seeing the indoor barn in person makes the “what if” much less abstract.
  • Talk through the morning-of timeline with your coordinator ahead of time, so everyone in your wedding party knows how and when that decision gets made.
  • If the forecast looks uncertain, decide early that morning. Confirming your choice as soon as you arrive avoids the setup-and-move scenario that carries the $350 fee.
  • Remember photos aren’t lost, just different. Historic barns, covered walkways, and interior details all photograph beautifully, and many couples end up loving their indoor portraits just as much as outdoor ones.

The Melhorn Manor difference

Because Melhorn Manor was renovated with both a historic outdoor setting and a fully climate-controlled indoor option in mind, couples don’t have to choose between “outdoor wedding” and “rain-safe wedding” months in advance. You get to make that call on the day, with full use of the property either way.
